I bought the base at an estate sale (in Tampa) of a retired butcher from New Jersey. He had it custom built in NYC in 1963. It originally had ball feet but one of them was split open so I removed them all and installed heavy-duty locking casters.I then sanded off 50+ years of dirt and wear-n-tear, down to bare wood. To finish it, I rubbed in three applications of mineral oil and two layers of organic bees wax.
I sealed the top with three layers of salad bowl finish. It is solid hard maple except for the bottom of the drawer wood paneling! And one cross bar support on bottom. That appears to be Florida Eucalyptus. The cutting surface is edge-grain hard maple 5.5 inches thick. I wanted to create a unique piece with ultimate versatility for preparation and serving, so I added. A cutting board to the top. It is an 20"x 21"x 1 5/8 end-grain board made of hard maple and black cherry and framed with American Hickory. A cutting board that sits in the leg frame. It is also an end grain, maple and cherry board. A stainless steel towel/utensil rack.
A commercial grade magnetic knife holder. This piece was crafted for a home that entertains often.
With the removable cutting boards and the lockable casters, there are several different configurations to utilize for a dinner/cocktail party, as well as everyday use. With proper care, your grandchildren will enjoy this unique piece. Note: Utensils shown are not included.
