As you may see in the photos, a couple of the wood block pieces have separated, but the pieces are still held safely in place by the steel rods going through the wood block. Therefore when you move this piece around, those couple separated areas might move too a little bit, including the leg that is safely attached to it.Lastly, its hard to tell if it was intentional made this way or not, but a small piece of the block might have been removed (picture 7). Once this table is set down where you want this piece to be in your home, rest assured, this table is not moving or going anywhere! The table is very heavy and stays put! I lightly tried removing the legs, but they are on pretty good, and probably have not been played around with for many decades. I don't want to chance weakening them, or stripping them out, or doing any accidental damage. Please note, there is the natural expected wear to be found with this piece.
I think of more as exceptional character, really making this table a piece of functional art in a room. Imagining the local butcher's sweat, love, and energy for the food they were preparing on this.
The story I got from the sweet older lady I bought this table from, was her father salvaged this piece from the landfill in Long Beach, CA, back in the early 1930's. He saw what was obviously a butcher literally dumping it, and then ran over to stop him and get it!
He then brought it back home, boiled it and got all of the animal fat/blood/etc out of the wood, then he restored it a bit while still preserving it's natural distressed character. Then the family proceeded to use it as a side table for as long as the previous owner could remember. Please note - Due to the weight of this butcher block table, this piece will need to go with a shipper rather than a ground postal service. Please view all of the photos carefully as they are part of the description. Thank you for looking at this piece!
